Women's health innovation, Mauritius
Mauritius
Mauritius is a small upper-middle-income island state with universal free public healthcare and health indicators well above the African average, so its women's-health story is more about strengthening existing services than building them from scratch. There is a genuine, active women's-health field: a long-running national cancer control programme covering HPV vaccination and cervical and breast screening, a UNDP-backed national e-health rollout, and a compact startup ecosystem around Turbine and the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council. Dedicated femtech companies are, however, scarce; most women's-health work sits inside the public system and long-standing NGOs rather than in venture-backed products.

Policy and public programmes
Women's health in Mauritius is anchored in national policy: the National Cancer Control Programme 2022-2025, a National Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy, and ICPD25 commitments on family planning and safe abortion within the law. HPV vaccination and screening are delivered free through the public system, and the government has committed to a maternal and perinatal death surveillance system with WHO support.
Women's-health landscape
Cervical and breast cancer dominate the women's-health conversation. Mauritius has one of the few declining cervical cancer trends in the region, helped by early adoption of HPV vaccination, while breast cancer remains the leading cancer in women and the focus of most NGO screening work. Reproductive-health gains have come largely through falling fertility rather than dramatic service change.
Organisations and services
Most women's-health delivery outside the public hospitals comes from long-established NGOs and private clinics offering screening and support, plus a growing private cancer-care sector. There is no cluster of dedicated femtech startups; the closest analogues are digital-health and telemedicine efforts sitting inside the broader health system.
Startup and women-in-tech ecosystem
Mauritius positions itself as an African tech and fintech hub, and its innovation ecosystem is real if small. Turbine, the ENL-backed incubator, and the state Mauritius Research and Innovation Council provide grants, seed capital and accreditation, while several women-in-tech networks are active. Health-tech shows up in this ecosystem more as diabetes and clinical tools than as dedicated women's-health products, so femtech remains a gap rather than a scene.
Funding and grants
There is little dedicated femtech venture funding in Mauritius. Public grant schemes and government e-health budgets are the main money moving through health innovation, alongside incubator seed capital that is sector-agnostic. Any femtech founder would most likely tap MRIC grants or Turbine seed capital rather than a specialist women's-health fund.
